Khakis are the New Denim

00003f

Haven’t you heard? Khakis are the new denim, and if you haven’t already, you should consider hopping on the bandwagon too.

First, lets look at the origins of the khaki, courtesy of GQ:

Khakis got their start as military kit among British colonial units stationed in sandy wastes, where their color worked as camouflage. Soon they became standard issue in any respectable military force with designs on global conquest. After World War II, their good looks brought them, as surplus, to widespread civilian use and manufacture.

While khakis have seen many minor adjustments over the past few decades (I’m looking at you, pleats), the most recent style change involves the most repeated yet important word on our blog: FIT. Details provides a great break down of what you should look for in a khaki pant:

LENGTH: Chinos that hit at the ankle work just as well as those that break slightly at the hem. However, too much of anything is never good. If your pants bunch around your ankles like crushed paper bags, see a tailor.

CUT: By now you know to avoid pleats. To up your game with khakis you’ll need to focus on fit. Straight-leg varieties are the most conventional and comfortable, while slim-cut versions, with a slightly low rise, are the most modern. Both types should skim your hips, and the fly should sit naturally.

CUFFS: When rolling up your khakis you’ll want to strike a balance between a cuff that looks unstudied and one that looks neat. Make them about an inch wide, fold them over two or three times, then scrunch them until they appear slightly uneven.

Apolis Activism - Khaki Chinos

Dr Denim Khaki Chino
Apolis Activism (pictured above) is one of our recent eco-friendly additions to the store, and their khaki pants are a great item to start with. Worn a little more loose while still maintaining a modern cut, it has slant pockets, including a small one for coins. The construction is 100% cotton so it’s easier to breathe through during the spring and summer months. $179.

Dr. Denim (pictured right) is another khaki alternative at the store – this time with a slimmer fit (read: not skinny). This khaki has a feel that is closer to denim than the Apolis Activism chinos, but is also 100% cotton and breathable. $135.

Looking for ideas on how to pair them up with your casual clothes? GQ has a great six image slideshow that can open your options up. You could easily wear these outfits with a pair of jeans, and they look even better with khakis.

Poll: Vote for your Favourite Gotstyle Dog!

I’m sure everyone at some point has met Hector, our iconic Bernese Mountain Dog. But did you know we also have a few other dogs that regularly roam the loft space?

Bailey

Bailey

Tashi, our administrative wonder-woman, always brings in Bailey, a cute Shiba Inu who we’ve deemed the Office Dog. You can find him hiding in our office for two reasons: because Tashi works there and more importantly, he doesn’t get along with other dogs. Never barks and moves at a slow pace, Mr. B is always neatly trimmed and has the puppy dog look down to a tee.

Bijou

Bijou

Joa’s dog Bijou is the feistiest of the three. Although he rarely comes in, the ___ is the smallest but barks the loudest. He can hold his own when he gets in playful scraps with Hector, but usually spends most of his time in his time-out box if he’s been bad. When he’s around, he’s usually hiding in the stock room.

Charlie

Charlie

Neale’s four year old Bichon Poo makes his visits late in the day. Although he visits more than stays, he does enjoy the company of people more than other dogs. Cute, cuddly, and playful, he prefers men over women and out of the bunch, and as Neale likes to call him, he’s the gay dog. Him and Bailey hate each other.

Hector

Hector
Last but not least there’s Michael’s dog Hector. He can always be found wandering around the store or blockading the entrance when people are coming in. He rarely barks, and is usually laying around (sometimes on his back), but this dog gets pretty active when he’s excited. Especially when you have food.

Melissa’s NYC Buying Trip for Fall 2010: Day 3

ENK NYC
Time to hit the shows! The first one was the ENK NYC show that was in a cool venue that, back in the day (way back), used to be a well known underground nightclub called the tunnel. Heard some stories of what used to happen in the rooms from the sales reps, who used to go there underage 20 years ago!

Found a few great new lines amongst the 110 brands that were showing there:

Company of WeThe Company of We, a collection by two young guys who want to offer fashionable, well priced clothing for fashionistas that can’t afford it. They originally started on-line but generated so much buzz that they expanding their collection internationally. We are very excited to have this line in for Fall 2010. The styling is amazing (softly pleated pants with a ribbed bottom, double layered sportcoats) but with prices that will allow you to be a fashion leader without breaking the bank (plus, the collection starts at size XS). Check out an article and slideshow on the NY Mag on The Company of We.

Tailor Vintage is the perfect washed down, comfortable clothing to wear on the weekend. Love the reversible patchwork chinos (the new walk of shame pants!). Picked up a hot new line of bracelets from M. Cohen (the sexy designer helped sell me on it!) that are all hand made and will be coming in for Spring.

Also connected with Rory from Sharps Barber (who happens to be a Canadian and also from the Maritimes!) so we will be bringing the product line into the store for Spring. See their website here.

SPIN NYCI wandered the show for a few more hours, it’s always about finding the next big brand or cool items for my customers.

After the trade show ended, ENK was having a party at this new venue called Spin NYC – it’s a hipster ping pong hall (co-owned by Susan Sarandon) that has bleachers, drinks, food, great music and about a dozen ping pong tables!  By the way, Susan is my personal hero, she is 60-something years old and is dating the the other owner of Spin who is 31!!

Thompson Hotel Bar in NYCPastisAt the end of the night, me and my girls bar hopped to each of the Thompson Hotels(left) – can’t wait for them to open in T.O.!

Ended up having omelets and frites at 4am at Pastis (right).

Keep an eye out for Day 4, out next week! You can also see Melissa’s tweets while on her buying trip on our Twitter page.

NYC

Woke up to a beautiful Spring day in New York – I have attended market in NYC every January for the past 15 years (before as a wholesaler, now as a buyer) and I have never seen weather like this! Usually we’re snowed in or it’s at least super cold, today I was wearing a blazer with no coat. Figured it was a sign that I should enjoy the day and do “research” instead, so the day started with brunch with the girls at a place called Public. It was the first time I have ever seen a caesar (the drink, not the salad) on the menu in New York, and they had an amazing dish called “turkish eggs”. YUM!Turkish Eggs at Public

Walking around the city, I checked out the menswear stores (and maybe a few ladies shoe stores that had some crazy sales – 70% off Marc Jacobs boots!!).
Shopping
It’s amazing what a great mood everyone is in when it’s nice out in January. Of course all this walking and shopping made us hungry. For dinner we headed to Staton Social in the Lower East Side, and all I can say is that each bite of food was an explosion of heaven in my mouth. At the end of the night we ended up in some tiny underground club that was also home to some interesting art installations, and they played some great 80’s retro tunes (that I don’t understand how all these kids know all the words to!). One thing I noticed is that the crowd wasn’t hipster, but they were all very well dressed, without the baggy jeans or sloppy t-shirts or shirts. All the guys were wearing cool knits pieces, slim fit shirts or shawl collared sweaters with dark denim or slim fit chinos.
