Melissa in Canadian Business Magazine: Staying fresh in a heat wave

by reggie in Press on August 24th, 2010 Discussion

In case you missed the latest issue of Canadian Business Magazine, Melissa was asked what to do when the boardroom sweats start to become a problem:

“There’s nothing worse than going for lunch and getting to your afternoon meeting with big pit stains under your arms,” says Melissa Austria, founder of Toronto-based menswear clothing store Gotstyle. “That’s all people can look at.”

If you’re a business person or, more specifically, a businessman without the option of wearing a skirt and sandals, this may be the year to rethink your summer wardrobe. Austria says the undershirt is a good place to start. Ditch the cotton for bamboo fabric, she says. It keeps moisture away from the body instead of trapping it.

Short-sleeved dress shirts are acceptable in most workplaces, Austria says, but they should be worn tucked in, have a tailored fit, and be in basic colours such as blue or white to avoid looking like something you’d wear to a Saturday night BBQ. To make this look even more formal, buy a shirt with a nice cuff detail on the arm, or pair it with a tie for that “geek chic” look.

What Happens in Vegas…

by Melissa in General on August 23rd, 2010 Discussion

Just got back from Vegas, attending the MAGIC Show. No, it’s not a David Copperfield convention, but one of the largest conventions for menswear retail and buying. Not only does it include MAGIC (meaning Men’s Apparel Guild of California) but also four other trade shows Project, Pool, MR, ENK, and Capsule. Some thoughts on Vegas?

Toronto Raptors’ Solomon Alabi was in the store yesterday!

by reggie in General on August 21st, 2010 Discussion

The Toronto Raptor’s second round pick, Solomon Alabi, stopped into Gotstyle yesterday, looking to get out of his freshman clothes and into something a little more sophisticated. The 7 foot 1 rookie has a 41 inch sleeve length and size 16 shoes… and was towering over everyone. He even had to duck underneath the canoe at the cash desk!

New York Buying Trip – Spring 2011

by Melissa in General on July 28th, 2010 Discussion

Just got back from the trade shows in NYC, starting to buy for next spring. After three trade shows, looking at over 500 different brands in the scorching NY heat, it made for a very long few days. But it is NYC and it’s always fun (and I always seem to go when the shoe sales are at 65% off!). Some things to look forward to for next Spring:

1. Lots of great new short and swimsuit options – finally they are coming out with new designs and details to make shorts more interesting for guys. The swimwear market is also exploding with trimmer styles and hopefully the end of the oversized swim trunks for guys.
2. Cool outerwear – I’m always on the search for new outerwear lines and found the perfect one from Norway, military inspired details, water resistant and a great fit for guys who work out.
3. New suit lines – There is a suit collection out of the UK called Without Prejudice that is starting to take over market share from Boss in the independent stores. They do a true size 41 for those in-between guys, offer working buttonholes with a contrast purple stitch… trying to get some styles in for Fall! Check out their collection on their site.

As for the restaurants and NY bars…stay tuned for the next post.

NYC buying trip for Spring 2010 this weekend!

by Melissa in General on July 20th, 2010 Discussion

Reggie’s note: This was actually supposed to be posted on Friday – Melissa is still in NYC for this!

The start of the buying season for Spring 2011 starts this weekend in New York with four different trade shows to check out – MRKET, Vanguard, Capsule and ENK. Hundreds of brands to look at, from classic to cutting edge. I have my priority of restaurants picked out – I’ll be checking out B.E.S. for brunch, Momofuko for Pork Buns, The Boom Boom rooftop at The Standard Hotel for cocktails… and always looking for new suggestions!

I’m also excited to be invited to a special gala that MR Magazine is throwing on Monday night to honour all the past honorees of the Uptown / Downtown awards that honours the best menswear stores in North America. We won in 2008 – other past Canadian winners include Holt Renfrew, Duggers (in Halifax) with Korry’s and Harry Rosen being honored for lifetime achievement awards.
