Celeb Style: Kayne West

by Courtney in Celeb Style on December 31st, 2011 Discussion

Is there any guy who does modern American fashion as well as Kanye West?

Last week, we saw Sergio Pizzorno use style to express his creativity. This week, Kanye uses style to express his attitude by wearing fur, leather, bright colours, and stand-out trends to garner attention and show his confidence.

If nothing, every man can learn one important lesson from Kayne: fusion. Mix trendy leather pants with a classic fur coat. And why can’t you wear tuxedo jackets with high tops? Kanye does a great job of combining urban youthful pieces with luxury. The result is youthful, cool, and confident.

Ease into a Kanye-inspired look with some edgy eyewear like these Michael Kors eyeglasses.

In his own words, he says to “dress like you’re coming from somewhere, and you’ve got some place to go.” So tonight, when you’re getting ready for New Year’s Eve, keep this in mind.

His keen personal style has led him to a shoe collaboration with Louis Vuitton, eyewear collection with Ksubi, and an accessory collaboration with M/M Paris.

Dressing like ‘Nye requires confidence and self-assuredness. If you’ve got those, then all you need to do is dress with fusion and attitude.

For formal events, he generally keeps it traditional with a Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo and bow tie. Of course, the gold safety pin adds a touch of attitude and quirkiness to the look.

Celeb Style: Sergio Pizzorno

by Courtney in Celeb Style on December 27th, 2011 Discussion

British guitarist and songwriter Sergio Pizzorno lets his creativity out through both music and fashion.

If you’re a creative type, this is a great way to show it. If you don’t have a formal dress code at work (or you work for yourself as an artist), and your social events give you the freedom to go beyond suits, having a wardrobe full of unique pieces and visual interest will convey your creativity.

To get Sergio’s look, mix basics with bright colours, patterns, and eclectic finds. Stocking up on scarves is key, too. Also notice how he chooses to use one or two (maximum) pieces as the centrepiece, keeping the rest solid and simple. Combining too many eclectic pieces looks messy, not creative.

Because this is such an eclectic look, keeping the fit slim will ensure that it’s you wearing the clothes and not the clothes wearing you. To balance out the patterns, colours, and textures he plays with on top, he always keeps his pants simple with skinny black pants or jeans.

He definitely stands out from fellow musicians in a light neutral jacket with green scarf. I love seeing guys wear light colours!

Celeb Style: David Walliams

by Courtney in Celeb Style on December 18th, 2011 Discussion

Another stylish celebrity from across the pond is British comedian David Walliams. Who’s dating history would make every man jealous. Seriously, it’s near impossible to find a picture of him without a gorgeous girl on his arm. So bachelors, listen up!

Walliams style isn’t loud, instead he choses to stay classic and very traditional. His style is commendable because he’s consistent, and never seems to have an off day. Because of this consistency with classic style, he’s a frequent on Best Dressed lists and won GQ’s Most Stylish Man award in 2009.

If you want to get this look, you’re going to need a lot of suits. Classic greys and blacks, solid shirts, and lots of ties. His use of textured ties is the perfect contemporary way to balance his choice of traditional suits. This look is polished, stylish, and such a refresher from all the casual menswear out there. And clearly, women love a man in a suit.

On top of wearing well-fitting suits, having this grown-up look means doing accessories right. Ties, bow ties, shoes, and pocket squares. No floppy hats, sneakers, or jewellery for this kind of man!

The Brits sure know how to do menswear right!

What a change his Little Britain character is from his usual look.

Celeb Style: Dwyane Wade

by Courtney in Celeb Style on December 8th, 2011 Discussion

Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade is a man of athletic talent and style. This isn’t news, though. He’s been featured on People’s 50 Most Beautiful people list, named the NBA’s most well-dressed player by GQ, and has held the title of Esquire’s Best Dressed Man of the Year twice. We loved him and his suit choices in this GQ article we featured in our last Runway to Reality post.

He always looks clean and dressed to impress. As a tall guy, he knows the importance of a well-tailored suit. He’s also able to play with colours and still look dapper and impressive, which helps him command attention in a very mature way.

He offers some great style advice in Men’s Fitness. My favourite piece of advice is to stand out:

“Last year during All-Star weekend I took a risk by wearing a bow tie and glasses. People had fun talking about it, but that’s the reaction I wanted.”

You wouldn’t expect to see a professional athlete, or any 6’4″, 220-pound man, wearing a bow tie and glasses. But that’s what fashion’s all about, pushing what’s accepted. And his clean, dapper looks have landed him serious praise from men’s style magazines.

He’s always been a trend starter, but we prefer the trend of bow ties to Band-Aids.

Celeb Style: David Beckham

by Courtney in Celeb Style on December 3rd, 2011 Discussion

For the more casual guys, David Beckham is a great celeb style guide. More often in rugged jeans and casual shirts than suits,  the trick to nailing this look is all in the fit.

Looking casual doesn’t mean looking like you’d rather be in bed. Keep your casual wear fitted, there’s a different between what you wear casually around the house and what you wear casually out in public. If you’re going to do a relaxed, baggier pair of jeans, keep your shirt fitted.

Casual guys tend to look out of their element and uncomfortable in formal clothes, keeping a bit of your casual attitude is as simple as tucking in only one side of your shirt.

David’s never afraid to accessorize, we see him in hats, glasses, belts, necklaces, bracelets, and scarves. Keep the bling factor toned down and pick pieces that work well with the clothes you’ve already got.

With Victoria Beckaham as his wife, it’s a given that there will always be fully formal events, he mixes classic suits with fun patterns like this. But like everyone he’s made his fashion missteps too, like this hairdo. We don’t recommend doing a half-pony at any time, especially not with a suit.
