Nice Rack: Even More Fun Finds for $50 and Under

by reggie in New Arrivals on December 30th, 2010 Discussion

Taking one more spin through, I poked around the $50 racks to see what kind of goodness I can find.

• • •

Belts Bonanza
Available in: All sizes
Price: $20

Yeah, I’m a little shocked too. We found a box of high quality belts in brown and black from various belt makers, and we’re selling them for $20 each. Some belts are listed as high as $155, which would be the one above, but I guess we’re selling them for $20 too. Twenty. Bucks.

• • •

Shoes & Sneakers
Available in: 7 to 12
Price: Up to $250 $50

I may be swayed by these three shoes/sneakers from Gordon Rush, Penguin, and Sully Wong, mainly because I already own them, but there’s a ton of fresh footwear to pick through, ranging from size 7 to 12s. If you’re on either side of that spectrum, you may have a better chance at finding one your size though.

Underwear from Ginch Gonch, Bjorn Borg, and Piss & Vinegar
Available in: Small to Large
Price: $35 $20

Cheap, fun, and occasionally tacky (but in a good way), spice up underneath your clothes with Ginch Gonch, Bjorn Borg, and Piss & Vinegar. Lots of colour graphic underwear to choose from. And they’re only $20 each.

The Boxing Day Sale racks won’t be up for much longer, so stop by the store as soon as you can before we close for the year on Friday. Have fun!

Nice Rack: Lots of Fun $250 Finds in the Boxing Day Sale

by reggie in New Arrivals on December 30th, 2010 Discussion

In an effort to prevent spending my vacation money, I focused my rack hunting skills on finding neat stuff in the Gotstyle sale racks and writing a blog post about it.

There’s always the misconception that that sale racks only contain the ugly, XL stuff. I’m here to break that myth. Sure, I did find a few pieces that made me want to write a separate blog post called Things That Make You Go Hmmm, but I also found a lot of really awesome pieces, especially for Spring/Summer. In my (small) size too!

Lots of amazing stuff went out on Boxing Day, but four days in and I’m still finding blog-worthy items. Here are a few things I saw that tickled my bargain-hunting fancy. Feel free to buy them before I do.

Trapper Jacket
Available in: Small, Medium
Price: $595 $250

Found this jacket from Trapper. Extra soft leather in a cool brown shade, a comfortable hood, and fits like a cozy glove. Ideal for fall, but if you like to layer, you can get by this winter in it. And it’s cheaper than my staff discount!

• • •

Cinque Jacket
Available in: Large
Price: $550 $250

Another great find was this dark brown jacket. It’s padded for insulation and will keep you warm this winter. And again, cheaper than my staff discount.

• • •

Not Your Father Tuxedo Blazer
Available in: 40, 42
Price: $495 $250

A white tuxedo blazer. Can you get any more Bond? Not Your Father makes a great trim cut blazer (as do all their suits, for that matter) that will put you in the dashing factor mode.

• • •

Kwasi Sports Coats
Available in: Small, Medium, Large
Price: $395 $250

Remember these sports coats from Toronto designer, Kwasi? They were hit at our fashion show at LG Fashion Week last year, and they’re available in our Boxing Day Sale for price you’d have to do a double take on. If you can pull these jackets off, you’ll be the hit at any party.

• • •

Gotstyle Suits
Available in: 38 to 46
Price: $750+ $250

I had a fellow tweet me, asking if we had any (somewhat) conservative suits in the Boxing Day Sale. Digging through the racks, I found a ton of great suits from 38 to 46 that didn’t look embarrassing. Charcoals, dark greys, lighter greys, solid and pinstriped.. you name it. And the markdown is ridiculous: these babies are $250 each!

I had a lot of fun picking out some stuff with one of our customers, who walked away with a ton of stuff, including a $90 pair of grey, cashmere socks for $20. Didn’t get a chance to snap a photo of his finds, but we were able to come up big!

What kind of deals were you able to find?

“We’ve had a huge run on purple. It is regal, and it is more accessible than pink.” – Melissa Austria (Toronto Star)

by reggie in Press on December 28th, 2010 Discussion

This holiday season you can’t swing a broker on Bay St. without hitting a guy in a lavender shirt.

One recent, albeit informal, survey (by a male friend, of course) in the locker-room at the Adelaide Club at First Canadian Place revealed pale purple shirts on 6 out of 8 hooks in the change room.

“We’ve had a huge run on purple,” says Melissa Austria, owner of Gotstyle. “It is regal, and it is more accessible than pink.”

Indeed, pink is so three years ago, says Austria, and men’s magazines are pushing it as a basic shirt colour now. That said, magazines and fashion shows are less influential in the bulge of the conservative business attire market. “Young men are dressing like gay men these days,” says Wendy Natale, the fashion editor at Hello Canada and principal of On Your Behalf, a personal shopping service that specializes in swanking up men. “They are embracing colour and flamboyance. The young guns are forcing their fathers to keep up.”

With the larger trend of going tieless, especially at night, Austria has sold a slew of purple pocket squares to go with purple shirts: “It looks naked with nothing at the neck if you don’t toss on a square.”

Ben Mulroney’s Hank Pocket Squares are Making Buzz

by reggie in Press on December 27th, 2010 Discussion

From Winnipeg to Fredericton (ironically where Melissa is from!), Hank, Ben Mulroney’s pocket square line, has been the buzz across the country. With the help of popular neckwear company Braemore, these pocket squares are the talk of the town – not just by the popularity of its designer, but by its colourful artwork designs.

From the National Post:
He’s not a full-on designer yet, but Ben Mulroney is going to develop a line of, wait for it, pocket squares! He’s partnering with Canadian tie-makers Braemore Neckwear to do it, but why? Well, according to the press release, Mulroney says “most men don’t take advantage of the best way to distinguish themselves: a breast pocket square.” And he seems to mean it—we looked through photos of the eTalk host over the years (see our slide show of Ben’s 10 Best Pocket Square Moments) and could only find two instances of him in a suit sans pocket square, and that was back in 2003 and 2006. But then, we also found a photo of him wearing this. In Toronto, the line will be carried at Holt Renfrew, Gotstyle and Ted’s Style Shoppe.
