Staff Picks for February

by reggie in Stuff We Like on February 27th, 2010 Discussion

Michael with Penguin sneakers, $145.

Michael chose the new Penguin sneakers for his favourite piece this month. The sneakers, that have a deck shoe style to it, use sophisticated fabrics (both suede and leather) to give it a low profile look with a bit of edge to it. The colours add a subtle pop to your dark denims and your light colour shorts. It’s a great all-around sneaker for spring.

Neale with a V.Frass scarf, $35

Neale is wearing a new scarf from V.Frass. Made with light weight cotton, its a spring and summer accessory for both daytime and night. It’s the perfect accessorizing piece to finish your look.

Veronica with a Gregory Allen shirt, $265

Veronica went with the Gregory Allen shirt, another piece new for spring. What makes this special for this season is the light weight material, the seer sucker detail, and the pattern-on-pattern design (which is making its re-debut this season). The shirt is also a great transition piece (can be worn from day to night) on your casual days. The snap buttons are an added bonus, and can be worn overtop a t-shirt – left open or closed.

Joa with a Tombolini suit ($895), Gotstyle private label shirt ($165), Dagr tie ($115)

It’s the time for tan coloured suits, so Joa picked out a Tombolini suit with a Gotstyle private label shirt and Dagr tie. Change things up this season from the charcoal and blacks for something a little more colour and personality.

Why we don’t carry…

by Melissa in Video Tips on February 26th, 2010 Discussion

Boss – A menswear staple for decades, which is why we want to offer the consumer something new. We carry Cinque suits (also from Germany) that offer the same quality level and styling at a much better price point of $600 versus $900. Since Cinque doesn’t have a massive international marketing budget that they have to maintain, they can keep their suit prices where they should be.

Canali / Zegna / Brioni – While we love the Italians, their suits range from $1,500 and up. At Gotstyle we would rather you have some money left over to go out for a nice dinner, so we carry suits from $600 to $1,200. We do carry some Italian off-springs (secondary collections) like T-Concept by Tombolini and Lab by Pal Zileri.

Most of the suits we carry are a half canvas garment so they are less expensive than a full canvas suit but still gives the benefit of a nice roll and padding to the lapel and stability to the front chest (so it will mold to your body the more you wear it).

All of our suits are a modern cut (shorter jacket, trimmer pants, nothing boxy or pleated) and we carry a good range of suits from size 36 to 46 tall.

What’s New: Fullum & Holt Belts

by reggie in New Arrivals on February 20th, 2010 Discussion

Canadian belt maker Fullum & Holt is one of the largest leather goods manufacturer in the world, and is officially our oldest, most established label. Started in 1897 (yes, that’s 113 years old), the Montreal based company has created quality leather goods for so long that, as an example, the Canadian Armed Forces contracted them to supply military belts and harnesses for the cavalry in 1914. If that’s not an example of quality, I don’t know what is.

The label uses a variety of sources for construction, including lizard and Belgian calf, Nubuk and genuine bridle leather, and buckles forged from solid brass and polished black nickel. Tons of different styles to choose from outside of the ones pictured above. Prices start at $85.

Definition of a Henley

by reggie in New Arrivals on February 18th, 2010 Discussion

Alternative Apparel, $90

Alternative Apparel, $90

I was just introduced to henley shirts mid last year. I admit, I had no idea what the rest of the staff were talking about when we first received our Alternative Apparel henleys. I tried to play it cool, but when I saw the shirts, I clued in, “Ohhhh, those things!”

Like myself, we still have a lot of people come through the store that have no idea what a henley is. Hopefully this post helps iron the details out (but don’t iron these ones).

In hindsight, they’re all around us and hardly anybody pays notice. When celebrity style bloggers breakdown a shot per clothing piece, the henley is often skipped. But its inclusion is what separates them from another person who uses a crew or v-neck instead. And they look really good on their own.

Think of it this way: a collared polo shirt can be considered a little formal at times. Remove the collar and you’re instantly different in the ocean of golf shirts, and much more casual looking too.

Henley shirts are fashionable yet very masculine – a rugged edge that can be paired with almost anything. Wear it under a blazer or vest (puffy or suit vest), under a rolled-up dress shirt, or even on its own.

True Blood womanizer Ryan Kwanten: Bad-ass in a Henley

NBA All-Star Chris Paul: Vest + Henley

Actor & People Magazine's #1 Bachelor Chace Crawford: Blazer + Henley

Football Icon David Beckham: Dress shirt + Henley

The new organic & distressed Alternative Apparel henley shirts (seen at the top) are $90, solid or striped. The original henley shirts are available for $45 each.
